Coin Roll Hunting 36 Customer Returned Penny Rolls, 5 Wheat Pennies Found

Coin roll hunting wheat pennies

As I've said many times before, hunting through customer returned rolls is a roll of the dice. Sometimes you get very lucky and find part of someone's collection. In other cases like this one you find only a few wheat pennies and maybe an interesting coin or two. This was one of the former cases so this will not be a long post.

As you can see I only found 5 wheat pennies in this venture. They were a 1958-D, two 1946 no mint marks, a 1944-D and the best find was a 1936 no mint mark. I'm not going to post an image of all the wheaties but here is an image of the 1936 coin.

Older wheat penny from 1930s

After that we have two Canadian pennies. I have started keeping any Canadian pennies I find that are 1965 or older because these coins were minted in smaller numbers compared to their American counterparts. These have dates of 1963 and 1964. Here is the image.

1960s Canadian pennies

I also found 5 good to very fine condition Lincoln Memorial pennies in this hunt but I won't be posting a close up image of those. Three of them were 1962 with two having the D mint mark. All are in really good shape and worth keeping for their long term value.

That's all for today. This was not a great haul and the sad part is I'm getting ready to go through fifty dollars worth of customer returned rolls. Yes, that is 100 rolls. I'm not really looking forward to it after doing this one but they are all from various sources so let's hope for better results this time. Also I have something more interesting that I hope to show you tomorrow or at least by early next week so stay tuned.

Huge Wheat Penny Explosion I Found Coin Roll Hunting A 25 Dollar Box Plus Mint Memorials

Coin roll hunting, bank pennies, old coins

I just got finished coin roll hunting a $25 box of pennies I picked up from the bank. This box was about half machine rolled pennies and half customer returned pennies. Customer returned pennies are kind of a mixed bag. Sometimes you find some really cool things and at other times you are just going through coins that have been searched by another collector. I was just about halfway through this box, mostly opening up the customer returned rolls and I had only found two wheat pennies. I was getting very discouraged, thinking this would be one of those boxes that was a complete waste of my time with little to no value on the return investment of my time.

Then it happened, as I approach the halfway point I began to see two to five wheat pennies dropping in each single bankroll. By the time I was done I had a huge number of 1940s and 1950s old American wheat back pennies. I even had a few that were older than that. I ended up with 22 wheat pennies from the 1940s and 23 wheat pennies from the 1950s. Also there was one penny with so much surface erosion that I could not reasonably make out the date. Here are the images.

These fifty odd wheat penny finds all by themselves would be more than enough from one box. But I found much more. I also found a few older wheat pennies. The dates on these were a 1936-S mint mark and these 1935 and 1937 wheat pennies with no mint marks. The 1936-S is a great find with average condition coins like this one being worth about 55 cents according to the price charts I could find online. Here are the images of these three pennies.

Wheat pennies, 1936-s penny, 1935 penny, 1937 penny

Now this would be enough for any collector. But I found something else amazing in this bank box. I found a ton of 1963 and 1964 mint state Lincoln Memorial pennies. I looked into the history of these mint dates and I found that there are a lot of errors, especially double stamp errors on the dates. Unfortunately these are very hard to see and I don't have a coin microscope or a jewelers lens to thoroughly investigate these other pennies. I will have to wait until I get the funds to buy one, or find someone that can help me identify these.

My mind wants to tell me that these are special coins, especially when you look at the three on the mint date of the 1963 pennies. That's supposed to be where one of the well-known errors is at. Of course with a cheap camera phone there's no way to tell. These images are just coming out weird looking because these pennies are in such good condition they reflect more light. There are 18 of the 1963 mint Lincoln Memorials. Here is the image of the 1963s.

Then we have 37 mint condition or near mint condition 1964-D and 1964 no mint mark pennies. I really think these Memorial pennies look really weird. They almost have that pushed in or indented look. This makes me think that they might be double stamped, there has to be some reason somebody had so many copies of the same coin in a collection. I guess at some point I'll have to get the proper tools to learn the true value of these coins.

A 1899 Indian Head Penny And Thirty-Seven Wheat Pennies I Found Coin Roll Hunting This Week

I actually got all of these pennies from a full box plus another forty dollars worth of pennies I picked up at work and the bank this week. I found the 1899 Indian head penny in the first roll I took out of a twenty-five dollar bank box. I was so excited to find it not only because it's the most valuable penny I have found but also because I was sure that box would end up having more Indian heads in it or at least a lot of wheat pennies. Unfortunately the box turned out to have only three or four wheat pennies in it and would have been the worst bank box ever if it wouldn't have been for the very first find. I have not been able to keep up on my blog posts for penny hunting because I have been concentrating on silver but I've kept everything I've found to make this one post. Below is a scan of the 1899 Indian head penny. As you can see it's in pretty good shape for a coin found in circulation.

Then we have the large number of wheat pennies that I've been hoarding. I'm separating these into three pics. The first one is the older wheat pennies I've found. There are three from the thirties and one from the twenties. We have a 1929 and then a 37,38 and 39. None of these older coins have mint marks on them but they are in great shape for their age. I wish I could find more copper pennies from these earlier dates but they are becoming harder and harder to find these days. Here is a scanned image of all four of these older wheat pennies.

Up next we have all the pennies from the forties and there are quite a lot of them. I found a total of seventeen this week and I'm very happy as there are actually more of these than the ones I found from the fifties. I won't go through all the dates here as there are just too many to list. You can see a scan below but the image is not as large as I usually post because I could not get them all to fit in the pic so I shrank it down a little bit.

And lastly we have all the pennies from the fifties. We had sixteen of these from a nice variety of dates. I'm pretty satisfied with this haul even though I had to go through a huge amount of pennies to find them all. I don't think I ever want to get this behind in my updates ever again. There was one face that was so worn down I couldn't get a date from it at all so I just placed it in this lot. You might also notice two things about this pic. One is that it's the normal larger size like my normal scans. I'm still trying to figure out why some scans come out like this and some I have to crop the image to cut out all the white area on the sides. I think I just need to group them more tightly when I lay them on the scanner. I'll try this next time I do a post. The second thing you will notice is that one of the pennies is upside down and a few others are lopsided, well I'. almost blind it seems without my glasses and I'm getting ready for work as I type this so I'm not going to do another scan. For those of you that have OCD, I'm sorry.

So our total of wheat pennies comes to 37 plus we got an Indian head that is the oldest one I have ever held in my hand. I'd say this is pretty good for going through sixty-five dollars in pennies. Looks like I might have to start hitting eBay soon to get rid of some of these.

Nine More Wheat Pennies I Found Coin Roll Hunting

So I finished going through another full box of pennies I picked up from the bank. I have really been hitting it hard when it comes to coin roll hunting lately. I think I'm getting burned out and I might have to slow down some though. I guess I just need a break from searching through all these dirty old coins. Sometimes I hit a really good box and that makes the effort and the filthy fingers I get worth it but most of the time I'm lucking to find ten wheat pennies from coin roll hunting a twenty-five dollar box like this one. This time I actually only got nine hits from the whole box. Pretty much all of them were from the 40s and 50s with one that looks like a 1926 but it's so chewed up I can't be a hundred percent sure. Anyway I think I'm going to be moving towards doing dimes for awhile since it's very easy to find the silver ones without having to look at each coin. This will save me a lot of time and make this hobby less of a chore for me. Of course I'll still be doing pennies but I'll keep it down to one box a week.

Sixteen Wheat Pennies I Pulled From A Box

So I grabbed another full box of pennies from Old National Bank and wouldn't you know it, this one was even a little better than the last one I went through. I pulled out one more wheat penny from this one and I even found a few foreign pennies that are old enough to keep. I will do another blog post about the Canadian and British pennies I found because I've been getting a lot of them lately in the rolls I've been going through. I've been pretty lucky lately in both the pennies and nickles I've found. I had one of my best weekends ever when it comes to valuable finds. Hopefully I'll be able to get all the posts up before the end of this week so you call all see my finds. Below is a scan of some of the older pennies I found in this latest box.

Then we have eight more pennies from the 1950s. I'm not going to bother listing the dates, you can see for yourself what they are anyway. I'm tired today and I have a lot of stuff to do before I can sleep so just check out the images and let me know if you see something I missed.

Fifteen Wheat Pennies I Pulled From A Bank Box

I didn't think I would be able to grab a full twenty-five dollar box from my main bank today. I tried to get up but I kept resetting my alarm for an hour or two later. It sucks but I never seem to be able to go to bed early enough. Often I find myself laying in bed for two hours or more before I finally fall asleep. I guess I need to try and take something for that. Sometimes I can get by on five hours of sleep but other times it just seems like I need more than eight. I don't know what's wrong with me.

I did finally wake up with enough time to spend two hours in town today. I ended up picking up about fifty dollars in dimes from one bank but I didn't get any silver. I then headed over to my favorite bank where I have my oldest account set up. Unfortunately they had already closed the vault so I couldn't get anything. There is an Old National Bank right behind them though, so I walked over there thinking I wouldn't make it in time but I did. I got a box of pennies from them and it turned out to be the best box I've come across in a long time. I think I need to start using them to get my coin rolls more often. By the time I went through the whole box I ended up with fifteen wheat pennies. Below are three pics showing what I found.

This first set of five wheat pennies has some older dates in it. I pulled a 1939 with no mint mark, a 1940 and a 1941 with no mint marks and a 1944D and 1947D. I could have sworn I pulled a 1920s wheat penny as well but my vision isn't very good so I was probably seeing a two that was really a three on the 1939 wheat back. The second set was some newer coins.

This second set of old coins is from the 1940s and 1950s and they are some of the best looking wheat pennies I have found all month. The first three are a 1952D and 1953S along with a 1946. The last two are a 1951S and 1951D. These are great condition coins and I was really happy to find them.

This last set of wheat pennies contains a 1950D, a 1951, a 1954D, a 1957D and a 1958D. All around this is a nice set of old coins. I think this box was actually worth the time I put in on it. It took me about 30 minutes to go through it but I'm sure I could have done it much faster. I think I might have to make the bank I got this box from my regular bank for coin roll hunting.

Ten Wheat Pennies I Scored From A Bank Box

I just finished going through another full box of pennies I bought from my bank. I'm fairly happy with the box because I found ten pennies in it. It's not what I would call a great set of finds but it's a lot better than the last two boxes I went through where I found almost nothing of value. I've been running really low on spare time lately so it can take me several days to find enough free time to completely unwrap fifty penny rolls like this. With my job combined with my family responsibilities I just can't seem to finish one of these in just one sitting. I was able to run out and grab more change today though. I had to get the rest of my rent money together so this gave me a good excuse to grab more change to go through. I should have two more posts up soon to share with you what I've found.

Anyway, below there are two pictures to show you the wheat pennies I pulled from this coin roll hunt. There were a total of five pennies from the forties and five from the fifties in this haul. It's always nice to find some older ones like these but I would really like to get some from the teens and twenties. The forties were two 1945 coins with no mint mark. One 1949, a 1942 and a 1942D. Some great pre-war pennies here. The fifties wheat pennies were a 1953D, 1956D, 1957, 1957D and a 1958. I don't see anything with a huge monetary value here but I'm just starting to learn what to look for so please post a comment if you ever see me miss a good find.

In other news I do believe I will be able to start getting together some rolls to give away soon. Remember that you will need to be a member of my World Community Grid team to be able to participate in these giveaways.

Another $25 Box Of Pennies With Really Low Returns

After getting a really low quality box of pennies from my last coin roll hunt I was hoping to hit a good box with some great returns this time but this box turned out to be even worse. It's times like these that I think about giving up on this hobby. I took a pic of this box as soon as I got home. There were a few rolls I had already went through while I was riding the bus home. I like to make the most of my time when I'm using public transportation and coin roll hunting is a great way to do that.

After I finished going through the whole twenty-five dollars worth of pennies I found that I had only got Three wheat pennies from the 40s and three from the 50s. Even though I also found two foreign pennies that are old enough to keep I can't count those as finds so if I got six hits out of fifty coin rolls that comes to less than one out of eight rolls which makes this a really bad box. Here is a pic of all the U.S coins.

The two foreign coins I found were not in the greatest shape but I was able to read the mint dates on both of them. They are 1953 and 1954 Canadian pennies. I posted an image of both sides of them below.

Twelve Wheat Pennies I Found In A Box Of Coins From The Bank

So I jumped on the bus to cash some checks last week and I also had my big bag of change to drop off at one of the banks I use that has a change machine. Unfortunately their machine was out of order and they said they would not have it fixed until later in the day or maybe the next day. So there I am holding a huge bag of pennies, nickles and dimes that probably weighs over forty pounds. I had other things to do that day and I wasn't going to lug that heavy bag of coins to the store and to my other bank. So I ended up standing there at the service table on the other side of my bank and rolled up sixty dollars in nickels so I wouldn't have to carry so much weight with me. It took me over an hour and wasted a lot of time but I really had no choice if I was going to get more coins that day and be able to do my shopping before the last bus runs. Because of this I couldn't get my box of nickles but I did get a box of pennies which is what your looking at now.

After going through this full box of $25 in pennies I found twelve wheat pennies. I tried to line them up in the picture from oldest to newest but my brain just isn't working right, plus I can't see very well so even though I have them lined up on my desk I always seem to get the order wrong by the time I line them up on the scanner. I guess I need to keep taking separate pics of the coins I find from each decade to keep them sorted so I don't keep making these mistakes. Here is a list of what I got. One 1930 and one 1935 with no mint marks. A 1940, 1944D and a 1946. Not bad for some before fifties coins. The rest were a 1950D and two 1952D coins. Then a 1953D, 1954D and 1956D. I believe the last one is a 1954 with no mint mark but I can't be completely sure because the last number is almost worn off. The condition of these old pennies is not that bad and this was more than ten wheat pennies in a box which is not bad. It comes out to about 1 penny in ever 4 rolls which seems about the average you find these days. At least that has been my experience. I'm always satisfied if I find one keeper penny in every four to five rolls I go through. Below is the image of everything I found in this box.

I have lots of loose penny rolls I have gone through in the last week that comes from change I bought at work. I will be putting together blog posts from them and I'll try to get those posted in the next week. I also have some updates I need to do to this blog to make it look nicer. Check out the sidebar to see what I'm doing.

Found Some Wheat Pennies While Coin Roll Hunting A Full Box From The Bank

I have gone through about a dozen full boxes of pennies and countless single rolls before today but this will be my first official post of a box I've gone through and shared online. I think I'm going to skip using my phone to take pics of these because all three of the cameras I have available right now look like crap when I take pics. When I do scans of the money I find while coin roll hunting the images look a hundred times better so I think I'm going to stick with this method. It might even be said that the coins look too good when they are scanned. It could be that I'm just blind and cant believe how good they look when their magnified, because believe me I'm so blind I sometimes bump into walls. I've been wearing glasses since I was three years old so yeah.

This is actually thirty dollars worth of pennies that I coin roll hunted but since I was waiting for the bus I went ahead and went through the first five dollars worth after I ate my fish sandwich and fries from Hardee's, damn that is a good fish sandwich but still not as good as they use to be about 10 years ago. Anyway you're only getting a picture of the $25 bank box of pennies here. I don't think anyone really cares about that anyway. The ten loose rolls I went through were almost a bust. I found one 1940s wheat penny from that group and a 1952 George VI Canadian penny. These have a value comparable to wheat pennies so I keep any of these I find.

Altogether this box was not that great. From my experience an average box of fifty rolls of pennies yields you about twenty wheat pennies or about that many coins that I would consider valuable only by their age. I don't really hunt for anything else as my vision is really too bad to catch error coins and the whole process seems way too time consuming for me. If I get more than twenty hits from a box then it's a good day for me. If I get less than fifteen then I am kind of bummed out. Here is a summery of the small amount of pennies I'm adding to my copper hoard.

I scored seven 1940s wheat pennies today. These are the oldest U.S coins I found today but at least these are almost all early in the decade. I don't think there is anything that really stands out but maybe you have a better eye than me. I would have liked to see some much older coins but something is better than nothing.

There where six 1950s wheat pennies. Which was really disappointing. I mean the fifties pennies are still so common that I should be able to pull over ten from a box easy and this was ten rolls more than a full box so I'm gonna go over here and cry for a little bit.

The last thing I found was a 1952 George VI Canadian penny. Above is a scan of both sides of the coin. As I said I keep my older Canadians and British coins because they have values similar to wheat pennies.

This was not a good box at all, not the worst box I ever opened but I had hoped I would have a better box to use for my first blog post. I think the worst box I ever coin roll hunted with gave me 12 wheat pennies and nothing else. Because there where so few hits in this box I won't be adding any of them to my giveaway project. It will probably be about a month before I'm ready to work on the coins for a cure blog anyway. Even though this was one of the least exciting bank penny boxes I have ever gone through I actually had a really good day today. I also picked up a box of nickles from the bank and found a ton of old Jefferson nickles including three silver war nickles. I have never found that many in one box before. I'm going to make a separate post about that and I'll try to get it up before this weekend. I hope you guys are having more luck with your wheat penny and coin roll hunting than I did with this box.
